I don't know, stella, you're going to have to do your own research. ;)

It's New Zealand beer for me today, Steinlager. Very gassy and hoppy. Very strong for me, 5% alcohol.

mind you, they don't make absinthe like they used to. there's no real wormwood in any modern absinthe = no hallucinations. to pseudo-quote Life of Brian, it's just a very tasty drink. with a bit of mystique if you go through the whole arcane ritual of sugar & flame which does f* all now there's no wormwood

That can't be right, otherwise they would've legalized the stuff long ago, obviously there is some reason why the united states was against the legalization of the drink over here up until now. Absinthe without being the original concoction seems pointless. =/

actually, just done a bit of reading on absinthe - seems wormwood is a red herring - isn't & has never been hallucinogenic. in the very old days brewers used to add a few cRaZy eXtRaS which could lead to hallucinations, but that hardly ever happened & in fact the whole psychotropic thing has just been hysteria (promoted mostly by famous drinkers who actually had mental problems & reported hallucinations from everything  )

re banning - you could say the same about non-THC hemp crops & William Randolph Hearst's successful lobbying to ban that last century (because hemp is a great alternative to paper, which would undercut his newspaper empire, to cut a long story short). isn't non-THC hemp still illegal to grow in the USA?

my experiences quaffing absinthe have been an excellent, fast way to get drunk on delicious candy-tasting liquor with NO ill effects in the morning - no hangover of any kind :o , but like most chemicals it would be different for everyone depending on the ingredients as well.

I forgot to mention Brothers cider
The pear one's goooood. Strawberry's a bit sickly and the lemon one I tried on Saturday, that was pretty good too.

It has been for awhile, but it's not like the good stuff from France.... I had some back in March, I was disappointed.

Wormwood is poisonous, thus the hallucinations. It also rids you of intestinal parasites, hence the name.

I have had absinthe, and hallucinated like a beast. I was copious sick. It was green. I was hungover for three days. I thank you.

I will never drink it again, the smell makes me heave. Nor gin.

You can also get 'sham absinthe' which is made with something I forget the name of.

Just Wiki it, it's all there...

wikipedia kinda says the opposite

Quote

Today it is known that absinthe does not cause hallucinations, especially ones similar to those described in 19th century studies. Thujone, the supposed active chemical in absinthe, is a GABA antagonist and, while it can produce muscle spasms in large doses, there is no evidence that it causes hallucinations. It has been speculated that reports of hallucinogenic effects of absinthe may have been due to poisonous chemicals being added to cheaper versions of the drink in the 19th century, to give it a more vivid colour.

Past reports estimated thujone levels in absinthe as high — up to 260 mg per kg of absinthe. More recent studies have shown that very little of the thujone present in wormwood actually makes it into a properly distilled absinthe, even when using historical recipes and methods. Most proper absinthes, both vintage and modern, are within the current EU limits.

Tests on mice show an LD50 of around 45 mg thujone per kg of body weight, much higher than what is contained in absinthe and the high amount of alcohol would kill a person many times over before the thujone became a danger. Although direct effects on humans are unknown, many have consumed thujone in higher amounts than present in absinthe through non-controversial sources like sage oil, which can be up to 50% thujone.

so, is anyone keen to drink some sage oil?

i did read about a modern experiment that replicated the famous 1800s hamster + thujone = hallucinations one, which basically said the same thing - you have to drink swimming pools of absinthe to get any effect, & by that stage you'd be dead anyway.

but the neat thing about absinthe (which may account for your experience) is that it's a weirdly different kind of drunk, for sure. i never feel inebriated on it, or impaired. but you really really really do feel altered

gin also makes me feel HIGHLY EMOTIONAL & not just plain drunk. drunk +

When I had it in France back in the 80's, we just poured it over sugar cubes and drank it like a shot (damn teenagers).... and then...
