My favourite seconds of a song How anal can one person be? Let me show you.

You know how you're listening to your favourite song with a group of people and some spiv keeps talking over it? So when it comes to the best bit, you have to blurt out "shhhh listen to this part!"...but then it's already over, and you're left with nothing but your burning hatred for said moron coupled with humiliating social impotence. Then you set the place on fire.

Perhaps a bit extreme. Anyway, I am here to rectify this situation for anyone who suffers similarly. I want to be all anal and listen to your favourite bits.

(fearing similar social impotence in utter lack of board responses to thread)

Hands Away 1:42 - 2:02

"Homespun desperation's knowing/Inside your cover's always blown"
This section just sums up all of TOTBL to me. When I hear this bit, it takes me right back to the first time I listened to the whole album in one go. I think it's a combination of the production, Paul's little axiom, and how incredibly classy and subtle Sam has always been - even in the earliest days.

Evil 2:51 - 2:53

It's so retardo of me, but the "aw" just before the "rosemary" line was actually picked up by Charlie White in the video. To me, it makes a very powerful statement in the otherwise distant and monotonous (in a good way) vocals. It has the same effect in the video of making the puppet's expressions more human by inserting this tiny feature.

Pace is the Trick 3:12 - 3:18

Paul's layered harmonies on this are a beautiful example of how he's expanded his vocals into a more lush and broader range. "I always follow the speed in the starswept night" is a line I wish I'd written, but no - Banks goin and bogarting all the good stuff.

I think you'll find that those bits are well-loved by many. :)

Indeed! I love these moments and don't think its being anal at all! I love the moments you mention, especially that aw in Evil, so amazing when Paul does it live too. :)

Carlos's little funky bass moment in Specialist about 5:59 to 6:00 mins in, is one of my particular fav little moments that springs to mind, but there are so many.

My two favourite parts at the moment:

The seconds in Precipitate,
'But you can fall back on lust, when you've learnt to wait'

Specialist,
'It's the time, fuck, the surface to meet the Specialist'

Precipitate 0:01 - 0:29

I just love the Intro... i find myself singing that part in my head all the time... (i even want a drum set just to play this part over and over again) :D

Untitled 0:29 - 0:50

The introduction of the drums at 0:39 is just magical

Obstacle 1 0:00 - 4:11

This song is my favourite... i can't find a favourite part... i love it all :D

PDA 0:00 - 0:08

I love the instruments... totally :D... love it... i want an Instrumental version of this song... i'd fucking love it, it would always be on my MP3, mixed CD's... everything... i love it...

Roland 0:26 - 0:52

Love this part too... everytime i hear it i just imagine the guy, Roland. love the song too... but i mainly listen to it for this part

Leif Erikson 1:10 - 1:42

Some of the best Lyrics i've heard from Paul

Leif Erikson 2:21 - 2:27

This one line... i will ALWAYS sing whenever i hear this song

"I'll bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night"

To add to those already mentioned (which I also love):

Anyone who interrupts the end of Public Pervert (~2.35+) or Not Even Jail (~4.35+) is getting fucked up.

There are too many to list, I'd have to compile some kind of mega-post while listening to every Interpol song I have.

You just reminded me, Not Even Jail,

We all hold hands, can we all hold hands

I listen to this walking home after college, it's absolutely fantastic.

I'm loving this, you guys. Songs mean so much more to me when I'm made to look at them in different ways, particularly when I know it jazzes someone else up.

I am actually completely not interested in having the band talk in detail about the songs, but I think it's more in keeping with their wishes for fans to jive off each other's ideas.

"jazzes" and "jives" What is this? 1963?

As a Doors fan, I hear Paul channeling Jim Morrison in this line. His voice, the lyrics...it's so cool that you mentioned this part because I always get taken back to listening to "The End" as a kid. That deep, sonorous voice coming out of a void. Pretentious moment...sorry!

I think that white blob walking behind you wants to hold your hand. Does it go to college with you? :D Sorry, am retard.

Sammy's drums during that part are fucking monolithic. I think I recall Paul bringing up Sam's work on NEJ as indicative of how amazing a drummer he is.

Jamie (husband - mine, not Paul's) calls the new album "a drum erection". (He's a drummer and guitarist)

this one line is so great, especially when paul kind of boosts the voice live (eg @ accelerator festival 03)

I love this thread!!! I am constantly tuning people out to listen to "my parts"!!

Here are the ones off the top of my head:

Heinrich - 3:09
- when Sam's drums really kick in, combined with the lyrics....pure gold :D

NYC 2:55
- double tracked vocals, with the kick ass guitar...the song just builds and builds

Narc 3:07 - end of song
- bit more obvious, but the lyrics here are great and I love the way Paul sings them

A Time To Be Small 3:21- 3:49
- Daniel's guitar is amazing here. Even though it is almost 30 seconds long, it feels like a tease!

And I agree with Not Even Jail - love the instrumental at the end and "can we all hold hands..."

Oh I don't even know...the first thing that popped into mind was the very first line of Public Pervert,

If time is my vessel then learning to love may be my way back to sea...

The very first time I listened to Antics, which was the first time I'd listened to any Interpol album, that line was one of the first that struck me. The music behind it is sublime, just the swelling guitar and the loveliness of everything together, it makes me picture some beautiful moment of heaven and it just touches me right at the core...of course the whole song is amazing, one of my favorites, but I always kindof hold my breath in anticipation for that moment. It's just musically so...euphoric.

I'm going to do this one by one

Public Pervert

So swoon baby starry nights
May our bodies remain
As weak we move, I'll feed you light, baby
May our bodies remain
Oh yeah in history, I'll treat you right, baby
I'm honest that way, hey

and the 2:34 - 4:39 part

I really think that each second has its own charisma and character, and that with an artist like Interpol, you are able to disect each album into the most miniscule pieces successfully, to get a real sense of the songs musically and lyrically.

Those little parts that just make you smile are one of my favorite parts of Interpol.
To add to those above I really really love the ending of Stella, the morendo and the lyrics and together it is just so beautiful

TOTBL:

untitled: very end of the song, those 2 notes carlos plays....are sooooHEAVY. it just lets you know ur in for a very deep ride.

obstacle 1: the guitar intro is iconic, then when paul shouts "and we can find new ways of LIVING!" chills. when sam plays matching 16th notes on the kick with carlos

NYC: the sweet drum part at the end of the song.

PDA : the guitar outro is one of the best moments in modern popular music. its transcendent.

say hello: the break down is the quintessential sam/carlos moment

hands away: "...your cover's always blown." that line/vocal and the final chord

obstacle 2: the opening stanza of lyrics has some of the best diction and imagery in any interpol song "i feel that love is in the kitchen with a culinary eye, i think hes making soemthing special and im smart enough to try"

stella: the closing outro....god i lvoe the totbl and antics outros. im mainly referring to the bass part here, but thent he way the drums accent with the snare and hihat swoop at the same time.

roland: the way it builds up the climaz and then the climax with that soaring guitar part. and also i liek how he says "um" in that lyric

the new: oh jeese, when daniel does the down tuning, its sooooo raunchy and gorgeous and then "youre looking alright tonight!!!!!" shout more paul!!

leif erikson: of course the "ill bring you when my lifeboat sails through the night" is legendary. and "its like learning a new language"

ANTICS:

next exit: i jsut lvoe the drums with the shaker,m its very the walkmen-ish

evil: the chorus just.....ok nevermind im not even gonna try.. PERFECTION

narc: one of the sexiest songs of all time. i love the bass/drums bridge. 'my spaaaace!"

tyoac: again the bass bridge, just makes me bounce, its so hot, i wanna bang all ngiht to it, the overdubbed layering of vocals

slow hands: the guitar br\idge, the shouting vocals, the drums during the chorus

noteven jail: the triumphant outro as if a conflict has found resolution

public pervert: the opening lines are perfect

c'mere: in the outro when the guitar seems to have more distortion on it, at the very end of the song, it jsut glides and soars and is loud and beautiful and it overtakes me!

length of love: the fantasticaloly interesting and rocking drum part, pauls ridicuslouily scary and mencaing vocals and lyrics" combaaaat salaaciousss remoooooval!"

a time to be so small: i lvoe that it sounds like a dark stormy mysetery novel, and that it ends with major chords

All of your parts are brilliant friendinmypants, but that one in particular is exactly how I feel about the ending. I really sense Kessler's hand in the key change elements of the songs, as in PDA - he just does a playful little flip with his own progression and the whole mood changes.

Public Pervert is such a rush of a song - it completely grabs you and takes you where you didn't expect to go. It lulls you in this swaying rhythm and gentle vocals for a while, then the drums just go all bitching at the part you mentioned.

God, I love it.

I think that is one my favorite things about Interpol....their music takes you in a direction you didn't expect to go in. Oddly enough, a good majority of songs that have the "dramatic half way point sound change" had me hooked because of the second half the song. So I would listen to entire songs for the second half, which ultimately got me loving the first half, thus, the whole song. B)
