I think for NYC people usually play the F and C chords. which is correct, but looking at some videos i see that the fingering is altered a little for easier movement. here are the basic 3 chords

1. dont play the F chord like how you would normally do (with the index finger running across the 1st fret). hold it like a C chord: index finger on B string, middle finger on G, pinky on D, and 4th finger on A.
E--------
B----1---
G----2---
D----3---
A----3---
E--------

2. you play this cord right before you make the transition to the C chord. its basically the same chord as above but with the G open. so you simply lift your middle finger
E--------
B----1---
G----0---
D----3---
A----3---
E--------

3. the C chord. by holding the F chord like a C chord, its very easy to move to the C chord
E--------
B----1---
G----0---
D----2---
A----3---
E--------

so you basically strum #1 ten times, play #2 once, then #3 four times. oh yes, its always nice if you can mute the E strings when you play

Right-O. The part in Evil, right after, "Sensitive-to-faith-not.... denial", Daniel plays his power chords, and Paul plays something else. I always thought you up-strum:

e------------------------------
B------------------------------
G----12-12-10-10-10-10-10-
D----12-12-10-10-10-10-10-
A------------------------------
E------------------------------

But then I saw him play it live on MTV.com, and it looks something like this:

e------------------------------
B-----8-8-6-6-6-6-6---------
G-----7-7-5-5-5-5-5---------
D-----------------------------
A------------------------------
E------------------------------

Anyone have any idea on whats correct? Just been eating me alive. That one part. Well, let me know.

-Harris

e--------------------
B-8-8-6-6-6-6-6---
G-5-5-5-5-5-5-5---
D--------------------
A--------------------
E--------------------

I think this is right.

What about the Chorus? I know for a fact Paul plays:

(x8) (x8) (x8) (x8) (x8) (x8)

e-----------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------
G---10-----7------15------14-----------------------
D---10-----7------15------14-----10------8--------
A----8------5----- 13------12-----10------8--------
E------------------------------------8-------6--------

And Daniel supposedly plays

F5(x8) D5(x8) Bb5(x8) A5(x8) C5(x8) Bb5(x8)

e-------------------------------------------------------|
B-------------------------------------------------------|
G---10------7-------------------------------------------|
D---10------7------8-------7--------10-------8--------|
A----8-------5----- 8------ 7--------10-------8--------|
E--------------------6-------5---------8-------6--------|

Is that correct? It seems different live.

Yeah, that's what i play for Paul's part. I can never figure out Dan's part. It seems like he doesn't even move up and down the fret board at all

Pauls part is SORT of Right, let me adjust it:

e-----------------------------------------------------
B-----------------------------------------------------
G---10-----7------15------14-----------------------
D----x------x------x--------x-----10------8--------
A----8------5----- 13------12-----10------8--------
E------------------------------------8-------6--------

I dont know about Daniels part though because he doesnt really switch chords, he just adds some of the bottoms strings to one chord, sort of like in Narc

but I may be wrong but im almost certain Pauls part is right

B------------------------------
G----12-12-10-10-10-10-10-
D----12-12-10-10-10-10-10-
A------------------------------
E------------------------------

i usually play that there with an up-strum.

D---10-----7------15------14-----10------8--------

paul plays the chorus of "evil" like that live.

this is a ridiculously simple question/answer for you guys. but when an 'x' is displayed in a tab like you have it there. i know that this means you have to mute the string... but... how do you do that and what difference does it make in sound, in general and in the conext of evil/other interpol songs?

Michael - It's kind of hard to explain. It's easier if you test it out yourself and take note of the differences.

yeah i can understand that it would be difficult to explain. i am just not aware of how the result would be achieved. i always kind of guessed it would be my apply a tiny amount of pressure onto the string, not enough to actually play the note but enough to stop it 'rattling'. yeah hard to expalin. but i am guessing it is not much to do with the strumming hand? its just that you see guitarists really thrashing the strings whilst maintaining the basic notes theya re playing (especially in solos etc). so i guess this is muting?

i dunno. i guess i should just go onto a musicians forum but i was interested in how this technique works in interpol songs. anyway. yeah

I guess i would say, if you have something like this:

e-----------
B-----------
G--7--------
D--x--------
A--5--------
E-----------

if you use your index finger for the A string, you would simultaneously be lightly touching the D string with lower part of the same finger, so it would be muted.

I hope that helps.

Does anybody know the hand position, or hand motion that Daniel uses for the pick scrape parts after the first chorus? It sounds simple on the recording just like muted down strokes, but when he plays it live is sounds really cool, almost like swishing sound before the pick scrapes.

He slides his hand down the fretboard muting all the strings, and strums what sounds like the D, G, B, and e strings. His p90 pickups give him that dirty sound too, so it doesnt sound that good with humbuckers. Try it though, it's fun.
