Well, Sam said he enjoys programming keyboards and I'm pretty sure Paul and Daniel can play the bass.

I think keyboards will take a backend on the next album (a la TOTBL and even Antics) -- Daniel will show some kind of piano arrangement throughout and there will be subtle organ bits throughout. I wouldn't be surprised if Brandon is brought in to record something more complex.

Bass is a different question. I really wish they'd keep it internal and keep as a trio, and I don't think Brad will stick as a permanent member.

Ideally, I'd like the band to remain a trio and have Brad or a variety of members (like the Julian Plenti album) play bass. However -- it won't work because Interpol is always touted as a rhythm band. They need a strong presence in that slot but not too strong that it overshadows the original/core members. We need to know something about them, their personality or something. Brad is good because he has potential to look Interpolish pretty easily, he's tall like Carlos, but we don't know much about him. He might as well be playing bass for the Hives, Modest Mouse, insert indie band name here. It's not about filling Carlos's shoes at all, that's impossible. It's about having someone out there to embrace as being a part of Interpol. So far, the last batch of guests (Brandon/Brad/Dave) just don't have it. I miss the days of Blasco, Farmer Dave, and even Eric -- they at least felt like more fits to the band than the last three ever have.

I was waiting for the Album 5 talk to start :) I would prefer them to find another permanent bass player. I feel like the sound would stay more consistent that way. Stability is good.

I think it might just be nostalgia talking but I'd love Blasco back touring with them, as I discovered Interpol in the Antics Era. I don't think he fit the band as well as Eric did but he fitted Antics pretty well.

It's a shame Pajo didn't stick around. He was awesome.

I think i read in one of the interviews that they all play/know keyboards to a certain extent. As for Bass, yeah, i seem to remember Daniel as an "In the closet" Bass Player.. Then again, it could also be this damned early hour I got up today.. BTW, I saw both Pajo and Truax (?) play live, and IMO Truax was better.

I think it's safe to assume that they will be handling keyboards on album 5, that's nothing new. I don't really see Daniel handling bass duties unfortunately -- I get the impression, while he has written basslines for the band, he's not really skilled at the instrument to the level you need to be for easy tracking.

Just a little wave of appreciation in Carlos' direction: I am listening to "Barricade" for the first time in a while, and I have to say, his bass part really does make it. I mean, it wouldn't be what it is without all of the parts, but I think the basslines are what a lot of us have been missing from the overall equation since Antics, really. I'm not saying I categorically dislike what they've done since then--not at all--but with the benefit of hindsight I'm comfortable saying that it's a fact, not just a first impression, that the loss of those funky basslines is big.

I agree with Nine. I would be very surprised if Daniel picks up bass duties in the future. Yes, he may contribute piano or write some of the bass parts, but I expect they would get someone else to play bass on the record.

^ The bass on Success is pretty great, too.

I just wanted to echo this too... I was listening to Barricade for the first time in a while just a few days ago and was really blown away by how great the bassline was. Carlos was really under-appreciated on this album probably because he was never really physically associated with it.

I think the bass could have been handled better in the mix on album 4. Memory Serves has some magnificent bass lines on it.

I seem to recall reading an interview where one of the remaining band members says that they really had to push Carlos to get him to do the dance-oriented bassline for "Barricade." Not that he wasn't capable (we know from the first two albums that he is)--but it just wasn't the kind of thing he was interested in doing anymore. That's the impression I got from the interview, anyway.

Is there any rumors about this 5th album? really? or it's just prediction game as usual?

As the band haven't come up with any break up news yet, we're assuming there'll be a fifth album.

The video in the link in the thread below is no longer viewable, but apparently Dan said there would be a fifth album.

Glad to hear it. I can't listen to "Our Love to Admire" or the self-titled album in full anymore or even really "Antics", but at the band's best, it's amazing and I want it to continue, even if I only get a song or two that I love, unlike the first 2 albums -- but I hope for so much more.

I just hope they throw out this whole "orchestral" thing. TOTBL's "Hands Away" proofs that they don't need lots of "orchastral" sounds to make a deep and moody song. Interpol at it's best? Focus more on the relation between the drums and the bass parts and lay a heavy rhythm section.
