In what horrible way did the media treat Interpol in the beginning? I know they are always so conscious of the way they are perceived and there must have been some incident that sparked that.

Not sure what you are referring to but when I first noticed them, they were the media's darlings, the Next Big Thing. At least until the next Next Big Thing. ^_^

You mean the NME saying that they're a rip off of Joy Division? I never understood that. It caused a ripple effect onto other online critics and bloggers.

I wasn't there from the beginning to know what actually happened but keep reading about the Joy Division comparison for ages now.

There was the moronic NME journalist Mark Beaumont I think his name is, that wrote the article saying that the Editors were now the best band blah blah blah and 'Pol should piss off (or words to the effect of ) the article is in the article section of the forum

Yeah I'm not sure what you're referring to but it seems that in general things have changed after OLTA. However journalists always express their feelings in a dramatic way so either they ridiculously praise or they sarcastically make fun of some bands. Its always been like that

I'm pretty sure visualinfidelity is referring to how Paul has said that he didn't like the way the media treated the band when they first blew up in 2002-2003. Paul has said this in multiple interviews.

I remember the first mention I saw of them in NME in 2001. It was an edition focussing on the music coming out of New York City and had reams about The Strokes.

But in a bottom corner, there was a small but pretty postive piece on Interpol alongside a picture. (As I was reading it, in a pub, in Camden Town, I looked up and saw the four people in the picture.

Dan saw me looking at them and seemed to acknowledge my double-take as I looked back at the page then back at them.

I've mentioned this before elsewhere in this here forum but I wish I'd gone over and had a natter).

I vaguely recall the music press treating them as a slow burner but references to 'dour' and a number of Manchester bands of the late 70's and early 80's wouldn't have helped the cause in their eyes.

Press interest reached its peak with Antics I reckon, well as far as the UK is concerned - Beaumonts piece was around OLTA wasn't it?

Great story! If I've read it before, I've forgotten it. One of the first big mentions I remember was Pitchfork. That was a brief romance.

Thanks TOTBL that's what I was thinking of. Thanks everyone for all the tips toward the articles. I love reading about the beginning

I think everyone knows Interpol is baller. I don't care about the comparisons because they are made by amateurs. If Interpol was crap, I would have never heard of them imo.

Can someone translate please? WTF is a baller?

Okay, I googled it. They made it to the big time.

Yes, they did and now every stupid critic has to talk shit about them because it's too different from the roots, or they've "lost touch".

Whatever.

I don't mind journalists or online bloggers having some objective criticisms about the music. It's just the snarky comments and name-calling that put me off. It's like some of them are proud of being pretentious jerks. They just end up writing stupid comments. I guess we live in an age where it's ok to be narcissistic and mean-spirited because those traits get the attention and controversy.

I have a feeling the fifth album is already written off as bad because Carlos has no involvement in it.

I have had that same feeling too. Hopefully they will just drop all the haters and pick up shiny new great fans. ^_^
