The Cobra School of Happiness
"This is a live version of a song on the first Thanatos CD. The studio version is pretty mellow! This song features William Tucker, Sam Fogarino, Eric Polcyn and...Me...The intro to this song is SOOO long because I was standing in the wings of the Vic Theater swilling beer...THIS YEAR...2010, Projekt is having a new festival where I will not be playing or swilling beer but you should go! It is in Philadelphia July 29 & 30 and all the info is on the Projekt Website. "

"The live tracks have (here I get to name drop), Sam Fogarino, now drummer for Interpol. I can say that without fear of seeming too self promotional as this ep was a limited edition. You cannot buy it anymore..although Projekt may have one or two lying around! After this the lovely and talented Vince Grech was the drummer."

Q - What was the line up for gigs? You often mentioned a live album. Does it exist and, if so, when will it appear? Will it be a collection of recording throughout the years or from one stage of your work?

A - Yeah I often mentioned that but I cannot get myself to listen all the shitty recordings. A good deal of the live recordings-- and there are like dozen of them-- are awful sound-wise. They are on one channel. You can only hear the bass. Some are good, but not too many. I figure that if I cannot stand to listen to them, who else would want to hear them? We have a passible recording of the last show we ever did but I don't know who would want to hear even that? The thing is that I can't imagine who'd buy it so why make it? I thought about doing a limited release of it and giving them out to anyone who'd ordered a Thanatos CD from Projekt or something like that. I may still but who knows.. I have other shit to worry about. Like the next "illegalteenagebikini" release. The line up was Me, Tucker, Eric Polcyn on bass and a number of drummers. The first two tours we had no drummer. For the Projekt Festival, we added one - Sam Fogarino , who is now drummer for a band called Interpol, and then Vince Gretch, who is an artist in Chicago these days.

Q - I always thought about You or Lycia as the ones whose potential wasn't "exploited" in the best possible ways. Also, you mentioned Sam, that drummer out of Interpol. They are huge these days. I like them very much. What do you think, honestly, about it?

A - I haven't talked to Sam Fogarino of Interpol in years but I am thrilled for him. I did try to call him to tell him the record is great but he 's on the road. He is great guy and a talented drummer. As far as me? Well, I've never really connected with anyone. My discs didn't blast off and sell. Why? Probably a lot of reasons. Small niche label that I really didn't fit into, limited promotion, but most important is that it really didn't grab a large number of people . It is sort of morose, downbeat stuff. Sam Rosenthal thinks it is because we didn't link Thanatos closely enough to him. Do I wish I became a rock star? Nope..it would be a disaster. If I had sold 10 times what I did I would have TRIED to make a living doing it and that STILL isn't enough money. Then I would have wound up trying to make music that would sell..and that would be awful. I am happy being a broke writer who does music.

Formed by vocalist/guitarist Padraic Ogl (Patrick Ogle) and Sam Rosenthal (black tape for a blue girl) back in the mists of time Thanatos released it's first CD, "This Endless Night Inside" in 1993, with the follow up disc "An Embassy to Gaius" following two years later. Both were built around acoustic guitar and electronics. In 1995 the band went live with William Tucker (Foetus, Chris Connelly Band, Pigface and a host of others) on guitar and Eric Polcyn (Godbullies) on bass. An EP was released for the second tour, "The Neighbor of the Beast"...with both live and studio tracks (the drummer on the live tracks was Sam Fogarino). Later Vince Grech played drums at shows. In 1997 the band released it's last record "Blisters"...this mainly featured William Tucker and Ogl on vocals and was more guitar and sample oriented. In April 1998 the band played it's last show at Lounge Axe in Chicago. Some of those tracks appear here. In 2003 the band released a disc under the moniker Illegalteenagebkini and entitled "I Am Not Job." The first show in 7 years will be at 9 p.m. Sunday, May 29 at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago (details in events). There may be a few (very few) other shows. There will be acoustic shows unless I change my mind and don't do them.....

Projekt is a Brooklyn, New York based independent record label specializing in gothic rock, ethereal, darkwave, ambient, shoegazer, dream-pop and dark cabaret created by Sam Rosenthal in 1983. Projekt bands are more likely to rely on keyboards and acoustic guitars than most other bands in the gothic genre, and their influences range from art and literature to ancient and world music.
The label has had many employees over the years, who assisted Sam with his vision. Shea Hovey is the current assistant who handles the press contacts as well as the mail-order; she has been with the label since 2000. Other employees of note were Charles Clutter, Padraic Ogle Thanatos / Precipice Records and Sam's ex-wife Lisa Feuer. Briefly, Sam Fogarino of Interpol worked at Projekt for a few months in the late-90s, though Sam [Rosenthal] has often commented, "I never really knew what he did."

Holy cow. I remember when Projekt Records was brand new. They sent me a lot of promotional stuff in the mail. I guess I was pegged as their target market (goth/ethereal, which was my thing at the time).

EDIT: Okay, so I just looked up their details and the label wasn't brand new when I started to get their promo stuff, but they were definitely having a big promotional push. This was around 1990.

Damn, Sam has been involved in seemingly everything.
