I'll start with some random ones
-BLUR TURNED DOWN GLASTO: "Alex James has revealed that Blur turned down a headline slot at this year's Glastonbury, the bassist joked that the slot was "nixed" by Damon Albarn's mum at the last minute, but said he thinks the group will reform in the future"
-GLASVEGAS COVER NIRVANA: "Glasvegas have revealed details of their debut album and their forthcoming single, "Daddy's gone", which is set to feature a cover of Norvans's "Come as you are". the band self-titled album, out Sept 8, will feature a host of new tracks, including "Polmont On my Mind", "SAD light" and "Ice cream van" as well as new versions of all the band's singles so far"
-RADIOHEAD VINYL: "out-of-print vinyl versions of "Kid A" and "Ok computer" are set to be re-released next month "

Is it just me, or is this a stranger nominee list than usual?

I knew that Kazzy,but thats OK :)
well apparently, Radiohead and The Last Shadow Puppets are the favourites. this doesn't mean they deserve to win tho.
Personally I think Robert Plant could also have a good chance to win it.
re BSP, I was very disappointed by their last album.their music doesn't seem to go anywhere IMO. it hasn't evolved at all. all songs are OK, but they all sound the same as the ones on the previous albums. what I'm trying to say is that if you listen to a single track you can say "well that's cool", but as a whole album 'Do You Like Rock Music?' is very weak

well, I think we all know that music prizes are not necessarily indicative of what is good in the music industry, don't we?
this year's choice is even more commercial than usual and crap. I agree.
I confess there are a couple of albums I haven't listened to and probably never will

interesting story, but it seems to be true,
the fact vicious is saying it's not is so absurd
Except Sid Vicious is dead.
Yeah, I doubt that the singer of Bloc Party would make up some story about Lydon just for laughs, especially if he actually got beat up over it. As if I needed another reason to hate him.

The Mercury Prize should go to a relatively unknown band that needs it. Making Radiohead a nominee is a fucking joke.
Sorry, it just had to be said.
Carry on.

Inspired by the Mercury Prize, Canada has the Polaris Music Prize . If I had a vote it would be for either Caribou or Stars.

dont' be sorry, you are just expressing your opinion.
Radiohead have been nominated multiple times (OK Computer,Amnesiac, Hail to the thief) but have never actually won the award. they are favourites this year, but I don't think they will win.
I guess they sort of always shortlist them as they have been one of the best things UK have ever had musically. fact. you may love them, you may not, but they are part of the music history.
do they deserve to win this year? I'm not sure. and mind you, I'm trying to be objective here as I love them like almost no other bands.
I see your point though. The Mercury Prize has a reputation for being awarded to outside chances rather than the favourites.OK, but what about PJ Harvey – Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea (2001) or Pulp – Different Class (1996) then?
I absolutely love PJ but she had been around for quite a few years when she won the prize, and her early music was much more revolutionary.
1994 was the Britpop year, but who won instead of either Blur, Pulp or Oasis (all 3 nominee)? M People – Elegant Slumming.
however so more news
Stella * posted this on another thread, but I think its worth a mention on here, unfortunately

also a bit of gossip

Ely is sick in bed today and really too weak for another Radiohead defense
I can't believe that those 5 chaps actually manage to get more insults on here than even Interpol. well done!!
my bad. I shouldn't have mentioned the Mercury prize, and I didn't even say they deserved to win.
and what about the other nominee then? are they all so good in comparison?
carry on guys <_<
In the meantime I will try and find another more interesting music news to lead the conversation elsewhere
