Magnetic Morning, Swervedriver Schedule Shows
Magnetic Morning to hit studio this fall to craft debut LP

Lest you thought something had put the kibosh on Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino and Swervedriver frontguy Adam Franklin's Magnetic Morning, the band has a whole mess of tour dates around North America to attend to this fall. Around that time, the two gents will take Magnetic Morning into the studio to start working up their debut full-length.

Franklin's no stranger to the studio these days, in fact. According to the band's website, members of the recently reformed Swervedriver took a little time out of a recent tour to do some recording in Portland. Just don't go sounding the "new album" alarm quite yet: Franklin, Jimmy Hartridge, and Steve George spent a day at the Dandy Warhols' Odditorium complex, where they took part in some sort of project the Dandys have cooking that features bands piggybacking on each other's backing tracks. Uh, don't get too excited either: the backing track the Swervedriver guys played over came courtesy of the Bravery. Yikes.

Something you can get excited about: a pair of Swervedriver dates this week in the UK.

hey imb, is interpol playing any dates on this tour? the ilike tour page suggests that they are playing at johnny brenda's in philly on 10/18 but maybe it's just an error. (http://www.ilike.com/artist/Interpol/on_tour)

Interpol finished their OLTA tour a couple of months ago and they are on a break. not dates are scheduled for a long while. most likely they won't play for at least another year. we don't know anything official yet.
The date ilike refers to is Sam Fogarino side project Magnetic Morning

So... I went to the Boston show last night, and it was great. I took in soundcheck and was immediately impressed with Adam Franklin's live voice.

The openers were both worth hearing. The chalkboard behind the bar said that the first band was Julie Ocean, but it wasn't. Apparently they broke up a couple of days ago--or a couple of days before the start of the tour. At any rate, the opener was The Brother Kite. A friend of mine hooked me up with their record a little while ago, and it's really pretty good. I don't know if they just opened for the Boston show or what. Next up was Springhouse. I thought some of their songs were much better than others. Jack Rabid seems like a funny guy. He dedicated one song to a woman who he said had traveled all the way from Tokyo to see them.

Magnetic Morning are playing as a five piece. It's Franklin on guitar and vocals, Sam on drums, Blasco (yay Blasco!) on guitar, Jimmy Lavalle (the Album Leaf) on keys/synths, and Josh Stoddard on bass. I totally should have grabbed a setlist, but I didn't. They must have played almost all of their songs, though. The last two were Cold War Kids and Athens 5--both excellent. The whole set just sounded really good... these guys are experienced, talented musicians, and it was fun to watch and hear them go at it. Blasco has some funky dance moves, too. :)

Afterwards I bought the new full-length cd at the merch table and hung around for a minute. I've been wanting to properly meet Sam--not just wave or smile or say hi at a signing or whatever--for a long time. He was talking in a circle with three women whom I've seen at 'pol shows. He signed their cds and I waited. As he walked away from them I called his name and introduced myself. As many people have said, he is a very nice guy, and not at all intimidating once you start talking with him. He's very natural--very much as you would expect from interviews. I told him how much I enjoyed the show and how good they sounded, and that my friends who couldn't catch the show would be sorry they'd missed it. He said that he knew not to expect too much--that he knows this isn't Interpol or Swervedriver, and then I said, "but it's great!" and he thanked me. I mentioned that it was cool to see Blasco again, and he said that they'd been friends for about 10 years, that he played with Blasco in Blasco Ballroom and that whenever he does a project it's always natural to call on him. Oh... and he was fascinated for a second by the rubber label on my camera bag. ^_^
