Health and Fitness What do you do?

Basically I do a brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes at the track 5 days a week. I eat 1,300 calories per day and burn off 200 of those with the walking. Also a few days a week I do a strength/with weights work out. Using dumbbells, I do squats, crunches, lunges, and other various toning things.
I've cut out white starchy foods completely. No potatoes, no breaded anything. Meats are mostly chicken, fish, turkey. Eating whole grains, brown rice instead of white. Drinking only hot tea or water, and skip desserts.
I allow myself one cheat day a week, where anything goes. Alcohol (wine), fried foods, whatever.
Anyway, I also take vitamins and a green tea supplement to boost metabolism. And that's about it. I feel pretty good and don't starve at all.

I try to use my elliptical about 4 times a week and on days I don't, I *try* to go for a bike ride or use my Pilates DVD. (Pilates is the best thing I ever did for my posture and "core" as they call it)
I've had a couple off weeks with the exercise, but I'm slowly getting back into the habit.

I used to have a personal trainer, but I sacked him cos he kept pushing me to do all these difficult things and I ended up hurting myself.
So now I do things myself. A quick run on the treadmill, and weights to tone my legs, arms, belly and thighs.
SWIMMING is one of the best workouts you can do. I go swimming three times a week.
I take a huge multivitamin twice a day and I avoid starchy foods and soda pop. I have two "cheat days" a week so I don't fall off the wagon.

I wish I had a treadmill, but there is no room for it in this house. Perhaps once I move out I will invest in one.
Oh, and Jenna - eliminating alcohol is really great. I did some serious damage to myself when I consumed it on a daily basis. :ph34r:
I'm curious about yoga and pilates. Think i'll look into doing that. There's a pilate gym here in my town, but I could never be comfortable working out in front of people. I also wish there was an indoor swimming pool nearby cause I LOVE to swim.

I'm already exhausted just reading this! :unsure:

Ma mammia! Blasphemy!!!
The only work out I'd do is walking. I'd eat twice a day on days I'm not working or when I stay home. I love fruits ( grape fruit/watermelon are my favs), anything really drenched with water and flavor.
Lately I've been staying a lot home and I have gained around 6 pounds that need to go. I'm thinking about starting a new program to loose it all as soon as I go back to university on January.
Pilates sound interesting cos from what I read you just use your own weight to work out, right. I'd love that coz I already have a strond build, just want to tone it, not increase muscles.
Also, does someone have a good recipe for women flats abs, fed up to be afraid to eat an olive and end up looking like I'm six months pregnant.

I work out everyday: five days a week at the gym for about an hour, and then weekends go hiking or cycling if the weather is good enough. I do something different each day, sometimes strength training, sometimes swimming, sometimes rowing, sometimes treadmill, sometimes lifting weights. I'd like to try spinning and ballroom dancing.
I had a personal trainer for the first half of this year, but I've stopped for now, I still have a few hours of credit with him so I think I'll work out with him again maybe around Christmas time, before going on vacation.
I loved having a trainer, he really pushed me and gave me a lot of confidence. He's shown me how important it is to try different things and how you really don't need those gym machines to be fit. He also made me realize how physically strong I really am, made me feel proud. I :wub: him.
I used to be able to maintain my body shape and weight without too much trouble but after 40.... it's absolutely completely necessary for me, no excuses.
As for food, I try to eat good, homemade food. Nothing processed. Stop eating as soon as I feel satisfied -- that's something I had to learn to do and it's really made a difference. During the week I eat a lot of salads, fruit and yogurt, on the weekend I relax a little. I like wine and beer, I'll drink that maybe a couple of times a week. Also I'm not above having a piece of cake or a hot dog if I really feel like it.

I'm making an effort to lose weight and become hot.
Things I don't eat anymore:
- Sugar (chocolates, cakes and things like that);
- Sodas and alcohol;
- Fats;
- Things like rice, pasta, pizza...
That's all I can do to lose weight. Any other advice for someone who has no time for some exercise?

I'm one of those people with a naturally fast metabolism. Nein chubb. :)
I'm exactly the same. I just lounge about thinking I should be working. Technically I am because I've usually got the Guradian in front of my face. That counts as a journalism student.
I do think about working out, and sometimes I even do a few sit-ups to tone up. That counts, right?

I've been ovo-lacto vegetarian for a long time and am fortunate to have inherited my mother's skinny genes so I don't have to worry about my weight. Being vegetarian is great for your skin and your health (in the past 20 years, I only got sick once - a bad cold, at the beginning of this year). I don't smoke and can probably count on my fingers how many alcoholic drinks I have in a year (I had one today, which was probably the second or third this year...). I drink lots of water, have smoothies or fruit juices when it's hot and green tea when it's cold. I do indulge myself every now and then, especially in winter, when I have sugar cravings and eat an indecent piece of chocolate cake almost every day. :blush:

And since extra calcium is important for women to take in, I try to eat one of those Viactiv calcium chews twice a day. (They actually taste like chocolate!) I especially need them because I do not drink milk at all. But even though the box is right on top of my microwave, I always forget to grab one.

I used to jog a lot, but due to me moving to another city for 6 months and stress I gave that up and now I am sooo out of shape. The hardest part is when you have to start building it up again. I heard that you burn more if you jog very slowly, but longer. Because your body is only tapping into your fat reserves after 30 minutes of exercise. So I think I will give that brisk walking a change, sounds less tiring (with emphasis on sounds).

I know how you feel! I hope to finish my thesis next month and then join a gym. There is a new one opening this month and it is just a 5 minute walk from my place.
About those abs, I used to have a 10 minute movie which covered a total work out for your abs. But I lost it when my computer crashed. I'll see if I can find it.

Your body needs 30 minutes to find out that you are full, that's why it is recommended to take your time when you are eating. I read that somewhere, or was it on Oprah? I love that Dr. Ozz guy, he really knows how to get your attention.

- Drink lots of water, at least 2 litres. It is also good for your skin.
- Take the steps more often.
- You can do some crunches before sleeping (now don’t say you do not have time for that missy!)
- Stop eating 2 to 3 hours before sleeping.
