How was your last gig?

I finished work at 7pm last night and was going to get the train back up to Scotland but instead I decided to stay on as I'm back on shift on Tuesday. So, I scanned the gigsinYork guide and the best I could come up with was the above. Morderstein sold themselves as a Rammstein covers band whereas Morpheus Rising were more, allegedly, in the vein of the puerile New Wave of British Heavy Metal. More affectionately known as NWOBHM by the fucking cocks that worship at the altar of that genre.
Anyway, I fancied a few beers and whiskies so any excuse to go out and get pished, eh!!
Morderstein
These fucking cats sauntered onstage at 2035. It was their first ever gig. I thought at first they were roadies, but nah, dressed like fucking truckers they mooched around onstage before starting. They were led by a big, fucken fat Teutonic chanter who, incredibly, started screaming heavy German shit from pieces of paper laid out in front of him. Obviously it was this fucking Rammstein lark he was banging on about. He just seemed to be repeating the same menacing sounding words over and over as he fucking bobbed his head like a fluffer during a break in filming a porno. Meanwhile, the guitarist, looking unnervingly like Bobcat Goldthwaite in Police Academy, was devil-horning it to no cunt in particular. To say they were shite is an understatement, it is like saying the TEA party are all-inclusive, lucid philanthropists. I was agog at these chimps. When their set finished I nipped out to another bar, The Stone Roses bar, which was fucking nonsense. How English folk still buy into that Simian Swagger of they Mancunian bands is fucking beyond me. It was obviously a shrine to The Roses but also featured the usual suspects of Shiteasis, The Fartlatans and some fucking no-marks called Brother. Whilst in there, having a Strongbow, I Am The Resurrection, came on. Fucking tripe. Bewilderingly there was a few cunts in there wearing those Alan 'Reni' Wren hats. Those fucking beach hats were last in vogue round about the time of Nancy Reagan.
I exited the Roses bar and fucked off back up tae the Fibbers for the 'headline' act. It was a bit busier as Morpheus Rising were a local band. As they broke into their first song I just shook my heid and burst out laughing. Every fucking Spinal Tap, Motley Crue, Anvil cliche was about to be played out. The duelling guitarists giving each other smouldering looks across the stage before nudging towards each other for a back to back solo whilst the lead singer hollers like a jailbird. Absolute fucking pap. Think shitty UK export, Bush, covering Marillion songs. You know it's a bad night when the lead guitarist, high on adrenaline, starts that Long Jump rhythmic clap. trying to motivate the audience and gets no response.
Unbelievably, gig-wise, that was the best York had to offer on a Sunday night.
I left well before the end and headed to an open mic night at a comedy club, which turned into a great night. But that's another story.
Apologies to any Rammstein or New Wave of British Heavy Metal fans, but both those subsets are shite.

Selah Sue was great, good vibes on a sunny day
Selah Sue - Crazy Vibes
Jamie Lidell: I love his voice very much and I love his music because it's so diverse. In Lokeren he did some older songs (from the 'Multiply'-album) and some songs of his new album. I liked his set, my companion was less enthusiastic. I must admit that not all of his songs have the same quality, some are mediocre. This one's a great and well-known song:
Jamie Lidell - Another Day
Lokerse Feesten - 4 August
Veggie day@Lokeren: the organization had been trying for years to get Morrissey to the Lokerse Feesten but he never accepted, then they proposed to Morrissey to ban all meat on the festival site for one day and he agreed to come. There has been a lot of fuss about this, it even was on the news. There was a call on a Facebook-group for people to throw a hamburger or some meat at Mozzer, but the security didn't allow any food on the festival site, and fortunately nothing happened. A lot of people came to see him, I think about 14.000. I enjoyed his set although he wasn't very enthusiastic (but he's always been that way on stage I remember). Some songs were really not good live: 'One Day Will Be Farewell' for example and 'There Is A Light', everyone was singing along but this was really a bad, slow version. Highlights for me were 'Meat Is Murder' during which videos were shown of the cruel treatment of animals. Afterwards Mozzy said: "thanks to those who listened". 'Irish Blood, English Heart' was also very good and 'First Of The Gang' but the highlight for me was 'I know It's Over', a Smith's song. I'm a fan of Morrissey, I think he's a great songwriter, he can describe the feeling of loneliness like no-one else and I love the fact that there's not only misery but also humour in his lyrics (some people don't seem to notice that).
Morrissey - First Of The Gang To Die
Morrissey - I Know It's Over
Lokerse Feesten - 5 August
Robert Plant and The Band Of Joy: I sat in the VIP-stage for this show where I had a good view on stage. It is not the kind of music to really dance to anyway. He did a mixture of songs from his latest album, 2 solo-songs and a couple of Led Zeppelin songs (in an Americana-coat). Great set and his voice is still super after all these years.
Robert Plant - Ramble On

Summing up what was four amazing days of music, here's the highlights for me:
- Trail of Dead (they were electric in this show with powerful riffs, an amazing show)
- Death from Above 1979 (this show was memorable, amazing show! my ears are still ringing)
- Mogway (terrific powerful show, mogwai music is so epic)
- Metronomy (excellent performing they were tight & it was very hot that night)
- Twin Shadow (excellent concert, the songs were played very well live & fitted perfectly in this festival)
- Warpaint (they surprise me, they are really good live, i was really into it, they should have played more)
- Crystal Stilts (i dig this band so i really wanted to see them live, they should have played at night so more people would have had a chance to go, though they sound fu**ing great)
- Kurt Vile (more people that i was expected to see this show, and it was great cuz his music interacted really well on the audience, a pretty good solid performance)
- Crystal Castles (2nd time i saw them.. the place was small for the nr of people who wanna to see them. Alice Glass was super & a lot of fun madness & chaos as usual)
- Blonde Redhead (such incredible performance!.. perfect playing, especially "Falling Man" i really like that song)
- Deerhunter (awesome show too, they play some songs of the recent album but "Nothing Ever Happened" was the highlight)
- Battles & The Joy Formidable (i didn't saw the whole show of this two bands but i really like their performances)

I went to see them in Leeds, last week. They were fucking sensational. A great venue also. A pity the crowd were subdued throughout. However, it was a stellar performance from them, the guitaring was masterly.

Saturday 11/05/11 in Brussels, Sunday 11/06/11 in Antwerp.
What a weekend! Both shows were sold-out. Crowd was really into it. Swaying arms, singing along,... great atmosphere. Especially in Brussels, when they did their last song 'One Day Like This' everyone was swaying their arms, also the people on the balcony. That was really beautiful. http://www.youtube.c...feature=related
Guy Garvey was funny as always, made us sing and wave, at some point in the show he said 'the spirit of Jim Kerr has entered me' :D These tricks worked once again..., the crowd loved it. Guy's singing was amazing and the band was super. Also beautiful lightshow. A pity they didn't play a few older songs though, most songs were from the last two albums. 'Station Approach' was the exception, that was amazing. Also very loud applause for 'Lippy Kids' which was a big hit in the single-charts here (the live Rock Werchter version). Again many goosebumps moments: 'Tower Crane Driver', 'Weather To Fly' and 'The Night Will Always Win' to name a few. If they come near you catch them if you can, Elbow shows are really something special ;)
The Birds
The Bones of You
Mirrorball
Neat Little Rows
Grounds for Divorce
The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver
The Night Will Always Win
The River
Some Riot
Dear Friends
Lippy Kids
Weather to Fly

A last minute.com type decision to attend (Thought it was sold out!) was rewarded with some good old blasts from the past. Amid something akin to a Goth convention, it was more Whitby than North London but Mark's voice seems to have held up comparatively more impressively than say Mark E Smith or McCulloch. Even if he is looking increasingly more like Jaz Coleman. Start to worry if he decides to wear boiler suits.
Rule Brittania had its Clash, Joy Division and Fall snippets, Second Skin was herculean and we were treated to In Shreds at the end.
I'm sure it's not particulalry 'healthy' to 'look back' but a cracking tune is a cracking tune, I'd like to think.

We don't get much in Memphis so people get a little nuts. :P
I'm still in shock that Interpol came here last year. :D
First time since 2001 that it didn't rain and turn into a mud bath. Really nice weekend and a gorgeous full moon. Perry Farrell of Jane's Addiction was loving it. :P They put on an excellent show as did The Cult. Bush was the highlight for me and my main reason for going. They sounded perfect. Wiz Khalifa ended the festival last night and he was awesome.
Like I said, we don't get much in Memphis and there were other bands at the Fest but Pitbull and such weren't my thing. Looks like I got some good pics for my flickr, plus I was pretty stoked to see two of my 90's crushes, Gavin Rossdale and Dave Navarro. Yay!

Weather - pavement egg-frying.
Three sets
1. Recent stuff with current line up - OK to 'Meh'
2. Classic line-up - Shelley, Diggle, Maher and Garvey
A bristling set of old nuggets that included...
Fast Cars
I Don't Mind
Autonomy
Get On Our Own
Why She's A Girl From The Chainstore
Mad Mad Judy
16 Again
Pulsebeat
Why Can't I Touch It
Everybodys Happy Nowadays
Promises
Love You More
What Do I Get
Harmony In My Head
Ever Fallen In Love
Orgasm Addict
I'd never seen them with this line-up and Maher's drumming on Pulsebeat was a joy to behold and I'm afraid I seemed to, ahem , 'get something in my eye', after 'What do I get' followed 'Love you More' and I 'Oh-oh-ed' rather too loudly.
Garvey was really enjoying himself, Maher looked like it was all a bit of a chore, brilliant though he was.
3. Howard Devoto joined them sans Garvey for a run through of Spiral Scratch with added 'Can't Control Myself' at the end.
Devoto nearly missed his cue as he sprinted on for Breakdown.
We were told the guitar that Shelley was playing was THE one used to record this masterpeice all them years ago.
By God it was hot, loud (abit too loud actually) and enjoyed looking at the silver haired oldies po-going like it was their last.
Diggle was an idiot though - stupid posing and spitting - somehow we were not impressed.
Unless they go on to do 'Kitchen' and 'Love Bites' back to back with the 'classic' line up, then this may be the last time I see them.

Mixing was quite terrible, though. Kick drum was WAY too loud. But the best part was that I got into the backstage after party with the band. :)

This was a great show. Some might disagree with me. Especially people who prefer their older albums because there were just a couple of older songs in the setlist. So, they didn't play many 'hits' but I didn't mind. Wouldn't I have liked hearing them play more songs from 'OK Computer' or 'The Bends'? Sure... but on the other hand I've seen too many bands already playing their 'hits' with reluctance and I hate that... The guys from Radiohead are enjoying themselves on stage and that creates a good vibe. And I like their more recent albums. They are moving on and it's up to their fans whether or not to follow them, I can imagine some might be dissapointed in a way. But they do what they want, they make and play the music they like and are not busy thinking "oh that might scare off our fans"... That's how it should be I think.
The show was musically top, visually top. They played a couple of 'new' songs also (already on YouTube for some time now). So I can say that I'm a satisfied Radiohead fan. This here is one of the highlights for me from the show: 'Nude'.

Highlights:
Rock Werchter: Elbow and especially Editors who celebrated their 10th anniversary. I managed to get to the front, that was a truly amazing show. Also enjoyed The Cure, Mumford and Sons, Pearl Jam, Snow Patrol and dEUS.
Pukkelpop: The Walkmen, Keane and Bloc Party
Lokerse Feesten: Bryan Ferry, dEUS, New Order and -long time no see- Suede.

Its only my personal opinion but the recent album release from Six Organs, Ascent, is by far the best release of 2012. So, when this show was announced, at short notice, I was raring to go. The Glad Cafe, is a somewhat new venue in Glasgow, so I was looking forward to attending there.
As per usual it was the same routine for me, get juiced up in the house and play some music to get in the mood for the main event. I managed to strongarm (non-violently!!) my old lady into attending the show with me. So, it was a pleasant drive over to the venue, replete with a hip-flask of some nice Aberdour single malt whisky. Ben Chasny & 2 other, sozzled buy happy geezers, sauntered onto the small stage at 2135 to muted applause. I would hazard that there was maybe 60 folks in attendance, not bad for a cold, Tuesday night in Glasgow. The sound was terrific in such a small, enclosed space though. The bassist got locked into a groove before Ben opened up with some wah-wah's playing the riff from Waswasa the opening track from Ascent, which is a funky, riffing instrumental. However, he meandered off into different directions with the track, which turned into something special. Indeed, the whole show had a touch of Neil Young & Crazy Horse about it. Ben Chasny's guitar freakouts were pulverising us at times, whilst the groove from the rhythm section was anchoring the sound dutifully. Another standout track from Ascent was A Thousand Birds, which turns into another Comets on Fire guitar orgasm. The band played for just under an hour, 6 songs, 4 from Ascent and 2 from 6 Organs vast, back catalogue. The band went off and then Ben came on for a short encore, which he played himself. Mesmerising stuff. It was a great show in a fantastic, wee venue. All too short though. But everyone went home happy.

Wouter De Backer (= Gotye) was born in Bruges but moved to Australia when he was 12. So in a way this gig was a sort of homecoming. The gig was in the Sportspalace wich is a big venue for 15.000 people. Although Gotye has had a huuuuuge hit with 'Somebody That I Used To Know' it doesn't mean you can sell out a venue like that so easily. There were only 5000 tickets sold. To solve that problem the stage was moved forward and only half of the venue was used. I think Gotye has some really great songs but also mediocre ones and we goth both. But I like Gotye, one of the reasons is that his music is very diverse, there are elements of soul, electronica,reggae,... in his music.
Gotye was very enthusiastic and during the gig he ran all over the stage using different instruments. The lightshow was minimal but there were animation films and images with each song which was nice. His singing was fantastic, crystal clear, same as on his albums. As Kimbra was on tour herself the audience had to sing her part of 'Somebody...' which went ok, people seemed to know the lyrics. The other singles also got a lot of applause. It was definitely a great evening, highlight for me is this song: 'Hearts a Mess'.
