As a bass player i find my self paying alot of attention to the bass lines in songs. Having listened to Interpol and Joy Division alot recently i think that Carlos D's bass playing is heavily influenced by Peter Hooks playing. For example the high bass lines that are basically melody lines that Peter Hook does in alot of New Order stuff. Carlos also does this kind of thing. Also Hooky does alot of dance grrove style bass lines that Carlos does a little bit. They both wear their strap way too low aswell and have to lean over and really fight the bass :D. I hope noone takes this post as another Interpol = Joy Division thread.

Yes as a bassist myself - i usually listen out for the bassline in songs and in Interpol there are plenty of beautiful basslines that i just love listening to and playing aswell. Yes Carlos does play alot like Peter Hook - they are both amazing bassists but the thing that bothers me - is the fact you think they wear their basses way too low - i wear my bass like that and i prefer it - i dont do it to look cool but its just easier.

im more of a guitarist but when listening to joy division i do notice Peter Hooks bass lines, especially in "the sound of music", near the end. Im not sure i cant hear the bass very well in Interpol apart from a few songs, but i dunno ive never noticed the peter hook style basslines in Interpol. Any specific songs which have hookish bass lines?

There was this article somewhere in the Article forum where Carlos was saying that Hook was *the* bassist.

Hmm. that contributed much.

Haha, not only that, but Peter Hook himself has defended Interpol off the JD-comparisions and stated that Interpol should be held by their own merit.

There are similarities - both provide a constantly moving undertone to the tracks, which drive forward the tune. Both bands, given their bassists, provide tight interplay by all members to create a tight, thorough, well produced sound.

I'd say there's an influence, Carlos has cited it himself. As far as bass playing in a song context though, Carlos plays the groove more often then he does melodic work, especially on Antics, and the opposite for Peter Hook. In addition, Carlos certainly plays some funky lines, which goes to his other influence John Taylor. In general Carlos takes a more rhythmic approach, while Peter Hook plays his bass more as a lead instrument.

yea in the jan/feb issue of URB, Mr. D states "Peter Hook comes in when I can use the bass to play actual melodies higher up on the strings"
often my favorite parts in songs are the bass lines. theres just something a bass that i am absolutely in love with.

I can also see a lot of parallels between Carlos and Andy Rourke from The Smiths, the way they both employ a rhythmic style, but with plenty of octaves and walk-ups.

I always thought Carlos' playing was more similar to David J. of Bauhaus/Love and Rockets

I'd say in "Say Hello to the Angels" Carlos does a bit of a Andy Rourke style bassline, but that's the only case of influence I can see in his playing.

Thanks Hooky! :P
TheNew: was this in an article somewhere? I've never come across Hooky saying that before.

in the end, no matter how similar or influenced carlos is by these legends, his style is his style. carlos d plays carlos d style and i love him for it.

For general conversation on individual bass playing, please take it to Non-Interpol general where a thread already exists.

Tthere is also a short general article on Hook and Interpol here: http://www.interpoln...2&hl=peter+hook

Dengler's main influences, expressed by him:

Peter Hook (JD & New Order)
Simon Gallup (The Cure)
John Taylor (Duran Duran)

I don't hear any similarity between Mr. D and Peter Hook.

Peter Hook is 10 times the Bassist than Mr D will even be.
